Expanding Tracks and Turntable maintenance

Already having rail in stock, and having acquired a large collection of reclaimed ties, we have begun trackwork in the yard with the extension of siding A alongside the building. A section of that track was removed previously to excavate and replace clogged drain tiles that have been a problem for years. That section was re-installed earlier this year and now we are working to extend the track north to our yard limit.

Work began on the turntable a few years ago when of a large section rotted ring ties were replaced by concrete. The remaining ring ties were replaced last year with concrete followed by removal of the rotted ring rail ties in the turntable pit and replacing them with a continuous concrete pad.

Additional work to the turntable includes maintenance to the roller assemblies at each end of the bridge along with lifting the bridge to perform a comprehensive inspection followed by any needed repairs including deck replacement and painting.

Also on our priority list and well underway is installation of track between the turntable and stalls 9 and 10 of the roundhouse. Those two tracks will complete trackage to the structure and enable us to use all of the tracks in both sections of the roundhouse.

Live Project Updates

The wooden ring ties were replaced with a concrete ring at the top surface of the pit wall and the ring rail support ties were replaced with a concrete pad in 2021. Maintenance and repairs are planned for the bridge structure and components.

Work progresses on Track A alongside the building and additional work has begun to complete the missing trackage between stalls 9 and 10 of the roundhouse and the turntable. Concrete that was poured between the rails in stalls 8, 9 and 10 have begun to be sawed and chipped away. Once finished, those tracks in the roundhouse will again be usable.

Concrete was chipped away alongside the existing rails in stalls 9 and 10 so new rails could be joined to them. Clearance was needed to allow for the bolts to be inserted through joiner bars.

The first section of rail was added to existing track in stall 9 towards the turntable. The track was connected with joiner bars where the concrete was chipped away. Concrete alongside the rails in stall 8 was saw cut and chipped away which will allow usage of additional track in stall 8.

A 75 degree day in November enabled trackwork to continue from stalls 9 and 10 toward the turntable. Sticks of rail were joined together on both tracks in preparation of gaging and spiking.

Forty degrees colder than the previous week, but volunteers stayed warm by completing the track between stall 9 and the turntable. The only thing left to do is complete ballasting the track.

Some nice Spring weather allowed volunteers to continue track work between the turntable and stalls 9 and 10 of the roundhouse. The stall 10 track has been aligned and spiked and ready for ballast. Using the spiker made work much easier for volunteers, not having to lug the jackhammer from tie to tie.

The Midwest Gandydancers returned to work alongside the roundhouse yesterday. A good crew of volunteers and nice weather allowed us to align and level the ties on the south side of the road crossing as well as the north side of the crossing alongside the dock. Next up, is to set the rail and start spiking.

A Track is nearing completion as volunteers finished spiking the track south of the road crossing and began ballasting the bed. Attention now turns to the track north of the crossing.

For the first time in many years all of the tracks leading from the turntable to stalls 6 through 10 of the roundhouse are occupied thanks to the efforts of our volunteer “gandy dancers”!

With the new trackage in place around the yard focus turned to replacing rotted ties on a section of one of the storage tracks that also included a switch. Rotted ties have been pulled one by one and reclaimed ties put in position to be spiked. The rails have been gaged, tie plates are in place and the spiking should begin this week.

Two roller assemblies were removed from the turntable for cleaning and inspection. One assembly proved to be in good condition while the other was found to be in desperate need of repair or replacement.

Weld repair is underway on the badly damaged turntable roller. After the rolling surface was welded, the roller was pre-machined to check for any low spots after which they were re-welded and finish machining performed.

The next track project began in September by clearing the front lot of the B&O wagon top caboose, the scale car and items stored alongside the building. The new storage track will run south from the warehouse dock inside the fence along West 3rd Street. Excavation started at the driveway to allow for a panel track road crossing to be set in place. Moving south, excavation was complicated by the existing footers below grade that once supported the canteen and bunkhouse. The track will eventually display the vintage railcars that are on permanent display.
