Glenwillow Depot

The depot built in 1883 by the Connotton Valley Railway as Falls Junction Depot to service the Villages of Solon and Chagrin Falls in Ohio.

Previously owned by the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad, it was donated to Midwest years ago when it was refurbished and used by the organization as a station for running its’ excursion trains. With excursion service ending a number of years ago, the depot was falling into disrepair and was sold to the Village of Glenwillow for $1. The depot would be the focal point for the new Pettibone Park planned across the tracks and be used for community functions. As a condition of the sale, MRPS would be allowed to use the depot if excursion service was to return in the future.

The project was to be completed in three phases with Midwest acting as the general contractor for the project.

Live Project Updates

Phase I of the project entailed excavating a basement in the new location across the tracks and building a foundation for the structure. Simultaneously, the depot was prepped for the imminent move by disconnecting power and placing steel I-beam supports under the structure so it could be lifted and moved. The move across the tracks took place on June 12, 2020 and the depot was attached to its’ new foundation.

Phase II of the project continued with Midwest contracted to replace the existing windows with new replacement windows and then repaint the structure from top to bottom in the identical two-tone scheme.

Phase III of the project was put on hold with the advent of the Covid-19 mandates of 2020 and has yet to be started. The final phase will entail interior work that includes electrical and plumbing. The Village has planned to build a deck alongside the depot to complete the project.

Work resumed at the depot during the summer with construction of decking, ramps and stairs on both sides of the building. Midwest specified building materials per drawings supplied by the Village of Glenwillow and contracted cement work and carpentry for this phase.
